Unknown Indian
There are two stories regarding this character, whose monument was erected to pay tribute to the suffering aboriginal races. Around it, a popular cult has been created about his supernatural powers and favors he grants to those who come to ask for benefits, as evidenced by the thank-you plaques placed in his surroundings.
Unknown Indian
First story
In 1929, M. KRAVIET and DAVID LEAL arrived at Isla Diego de Almagro to exploit marble. On May 6, they were attacked by aborigines; LEAL died from a gunshot wound and Kraviet fled wounded. When they arrived from Punta Arenas, they found Leal tied to a block of marble and the dead indigenous man wearing the Russian’s clothes. In 1969, when the Edwin Neracher monument was inaugurated in the cemetery, it was discovered that there were two skeletons in the coffin.
Second story
Upon arriving at Isla Diego de Almagro, KRAVIET claimed that they had been attacked by Alacalufe Indians, who killed LEAL. However, Pascualini did not believe his version. Under pressure, KRAVIET confessed that they had planned to kill the Indian to steal his wolf skins and then murdered LEAL. Later, LEAL’s remains were taken to Lota and the Yaghan’s remains to the Punta Arenas cemetery. In 1974, when relocating the monument of the UNKNOWN INDIAN, it was discovered that there were remains of two people.
